CHAPTER 15

“What do we do?” I huffed as we formed a triangle with our backs to each other, facing outward. The corn demons circled and neared, more than a dozen by my count.

“A better question is what the fuck are those?” Nelly huffed. She apparently didn’t recognize the monsters.

Clive gave us a quick summary of the threat. “These are feldgeisters, spirits who take on whatever shape is most convenient, using whatever materials are around.”

In this case, we faced scarecrows, corn dolls with eerie button eyes, and a mishmash of animals like a goat crossed with a rabbit with great big fangs.

“They look dangerous,” I noted as they advanced, saying nothing, unless the creak and squish of their horrific limbs counted.

“They’re killers,” Clive confirmed.

“Fucking great,” I muttered. “So how do we win?”

“Destroy their bodies,” Nelly advised. “Once they run out of things to inhabit, they’ll disperse.

Easier said than done. I had my wand, which I didn’t know how to properly use. Poor Clive wavered on his feet, his magic depleted. Which left Nelly.

Brave fucking Nelly who yelled as she charged the scarecrow with its pumpkin head. Slice. The over-ripe fruit separated and splattered on the ground. The headless body kept coming at her, though, forcing her to dismantle every piece of it before swinging to the next monster.

“We have to help her!” I cried out, feeling useless.

Clive pointed his hand and managed a tiny spark. “Fuck,” he muttered before charging at the corn doll. He wrestled it with his bare hands.

Me? I barely avoided the claws on the rooster-lamb hybrid that lunged for me. I doubted I’d be able to tear its limbs enough to make it impotent.

I racked my brain for my lessons from the academy. We’d spent an entire year learning of all the monsters in the world that we might encounter. So many of them that they ran together in my head.

But the one thing I did recall?

The grand majority of them hated fire. Now, I didn’t have a match to my name. Never did like smoking. Clive and Nelly didn’t either—although I had a feeling Clive possibly enjoyed a bit of the green stuff, given I’d smelled skunk around him a few times. I doubted they’d brought a lighter.

I ducked a swinging limb that was part rooster wing, part paw, and as I was bent over, I reached for a dried stalk on the ground. It would make a fine torch.

I hollered to Clive, “How do I make fire?” I used my stalk to whack the rooster monster as it crowded me.

“With magic?” he clarified, turning for a second from the corncob monster he’d been kicking apart.

“Duh.” I would have rolled my eyes, but I couldn’t afford to take them off the encroaching threat.

He must have seen my cornstalk and grasped the idea since he scooped his own from the ground. He gripped it tight with his fist, his face pale and sweating as he tried to ignite it from a depleted magical well.
